Barge Stuck at Sunset Beach, Vancouver

The Barge That Got Away

A wind and rain storm hit Vancouver today and flooding is a problem in many parts of the province. We had wind gusts between 70-90 km/h.

My son, Mik, gave me a heads-up that a barge was stuck at Sunset Beach in Vancouver near the Burrard Bridge after it was drifting across English Bay.

The photos today are all in black and white. Mostly because I think it tells the story better but also because it reminds me of black-and-white photos from floods in my hometown of Lemvig, Denmark.

Onlookers came out and everyone had their cell phones or digital cameras ready and newsreels were captured. Some were braver than others and one guy got completely soaked as the waves came crashing in over him.

Security was onsite and they had to tell one guy to move away from the seawall for his own safety.

Stay safe out there…

The Barge - Day 2

What a difference 18 hours can make. We woke up the day after the storm to a calm and sunny morning. Curiosity had me return to the scene and now the barge was roped off and local RCMP was on guard.

People were still out with cameras and it was interesting to see the barge again at low tide and how it is jammed into place, right there at Sunset Beach.

I read a few headlines today and found out the Barge already has its own twitter account, @EnglishBayBarge and Vancouver Is Awesome ran an article: 6 reasons why the English Bay barge should stay exactly where it is :)

On a more serious note flooding and landslides are now a major problem along many of BC’s highways and areas in Abbotsford and Merritt are particularly hard hit.

I will keep an eye on the barge since I live nearby. In the meantime here are a few more photos from Day 2.
